Another Reason to Keep Moving

First of all, a bit of inspiration: the other day the BBC did a feature on a fitness instructor and bodybuilder. What makes her special?! She’s 75 years old and you’d never guess it from looking at her. She’s in better shape than most 20 year olds. Check her out spreading the fitness bug. I bet she has some long telomeres! Case closed, exercise does slow aging.

Speaking of exercise, new studies suggest that simply keeping your gym date isn’t enough. Mounting evidence shows that sitting all day can ruin your fitness efforts. Researchers aren’t yet sure why sitting for long periods during the day should cause health problems regardless of other exercise you might be getting, but they do have a solution – keep moving.

Experts recommend taking “micro-breaks” every 30-90 minutes. Stop whatever you’re doing, get up and move around. It doesn’t have to be a lot or even intense. Just get up and move. Go get some coffee, walk around the office, do a couple stretches, or take a flight of stairs. It’s good for your body, but it’s also good for your brain, productivity, and creativity. Check out this interview on the Harvard Business Review

Not sure you can remember to take a break every half hour or so? There are computer programs, like this one that puts your computer into “time out” mode, that can help. Or you can structure your day or your office so that you’re moving more naturally. Try sitting on a stability ball or using a standing desk.
