What’s your reason? Exercise makes you less greedy!

Say what?! Yup, one of my favourite sources for random scientific fitness news, Runner’s World blog, Sweat Science, recently wrote about a new study that looks into the link between exercise and the brain’s reward system. Because exercise causes a release of dopamine that results in elevated levels even hours after your sweat session, it dulls other dopamine hits like drugs, food, and even the allure of earning money. Oddly enough, it seems to have no effect on how the brain responds to the possibility of losing money. But gaining and losing operate on completely different brain circuits (an aside for another day…)

I’m not exactly sure the practical ramifications of this study, but a less greedy world is something I can get behind and it’s one more good reason to get off the couch. So, time to get my shoes! What’s your reason?!
