I’m all for a bargain, just ask hubby – I love saving money! Normally I’m not much for brands. If there’s a generic version that’s a euro (or a dollar) cheaper, then somehow I just can’t justify buying something for the fancy label. But there are some products where the generic really doesn’t live up to the original. When I was a kid, even when we were pinching our pennies, that meant Smucker’s Jam, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise, and Thomas’s English Muffins.
These days I’m still a big fan of Hellmann’s (though I’ve converted to the light – the extra light just tastes weird), but there’s a few others that top the list. At the top of that list is Nutella. I’ve tried all the generics – they’re all too sugary and somehow plastic-like. None of them manage that perfect texture and hazelnut taste. It’s a dangerous jar to keep in the house, but when I do splurge, I definitely go for the good stuff.
Likewise, there’s no cookie spread like Lotus’s Speculoos Spread. It’s gaining popularity in North America and was recently made available in the UK. This stuff is crazy addictive and the generics just don’t compare!
What foods/products do you buy where generics simply won’t do?
I grew up in Pittsburgh where Heinz is and Heinz ketchup is the only way to go. Even though I still hold allegiance to Heinz, ketchup in general is not my favorite because now I just think of all the high fructose corn syrup in it. Clearly, I need to think about something else when I see it!
I have to agree with Nutella!
I know – I’m always amazed at HOW different the generics are. I guess Nutella are really guarding that secret recipe =p
